Microsoft just announced the biggest licensing change in over a decade, and I want to make sure you hear about it from someone who isn't trying to upsell you.
Starting May 1, 2026, Microsoft is rolling out a brand new tier called Microsoft 365 E7 — what they're calling the "Frontier Suite." It bundles everything in E5 with Copilot, their new Agent 365 platform, and the full Entra identity security stack. One SKU, one price: $99 per user per month.
If you're a business owner reading that and thinking "I have no idea what any of those words mean," don't worry. That's why I'm writing this.
What's Actually Changing?
First, the good news: nothing is being taken away from you. If you're on Business Basic, Business Standard, Business Premium, E3, or E5 — your plan isn't going anywhere. Microsoft isn't forcing anyone to move.
What they're doing is adding a new top-tier option. Think of it like this:
- E3 ($36/user/mo) — Your standard productivity suite with security basics
- E5 ($57/user/mo, going up to ~$60 in July) — Everything in E3 plus advanced security, compliance, and analytics
- E7 ($99/user/mo) — Everything in E5 plus Copilot AI, Agent 365, and Entra identity suite
The math Microsoft wants you to do: if you're already paying for E5 ($57) and added Copilot ($30) separately, that's $87 per user. E7 at $99 gives you both of those plus Agent 365 and Entra — tools that would cost roughly $18 more if purchased individually. So you'd be saving about $6 per user compared to buying everything a la carte.
Who Should Actually Care About This?
Let me be direct. If you're a 20-person company on Business Premium, this announcement has almost zero impact on you right now. E7 is an enterprise play. Microsoft is targeting organizations with hundreds or thousands of users where the per-user savings add up to real money.
But here's what does matter, even for smaller businesses:
The E5 Price Increase
Microsoft is bumping E5 from $57 to roughly $60 per user starting in July 2026. On its own, that's not earth-shattering. But it's the third price increase on E5 in the last few years, and it signals where Microsoft is headed: they want to push everyone up the ladder toward AI-embedded products.
Copilot Is No Longer Optional — It's Being Baked In
The fact that Microsoft built an entirely new tier around Copilot tells you everything about their strategy. They're not asking "do you want AI?" anymore. They're asking "which bundle do you want AI in?" If you've been holding off on Copilot because the $30/user add-on felt hard to justify, you should know that Microsoft is going to keep making it harder to avoid.
Agent 365 Is the Sleeper
Most of the coverage is focused on Copilot, but Agent 365 is the more interesting piece. It's a platform for deploying autonomous AI agents — think automated workflows that can handle things like processing invoices, triaging support tickets, or managing approvals without human intervention.
It's available standalone at $15/user for non-E7 customers starting May 1. If you've been looking at AI automation for your business, this is worth watching closely. It's not mature yet, but Microsoft clearly sees agents as the next phase after copilots.
What You Should Do Right Now
Here's my honest advice, depending on where you are today:
If You're on Business Basic or Standard
Nothing to do. Seriously. This doesn't affect you. Keep doing what you're doing. When it's time to level up your security or compliance, we can talk about E3 or Business Premium — but E7 is not on your radar.
If You're on E3
The July E5 price bump narrows the gap between E3 and E5. If you've been on the fence about upgrading for the advanced security tools, it might be worth revisiting that conversation in Q3. But don't rush into it because of E7 hype.
If You're on E5 + Copilot Add-On
This is where E7 gets interesting. Run the math on your current per-user spend. If you're paying $87+ per user today (E5 + Copilot), the jump to $99 for E7 might make sense — especially if Agent 365 and Entra are tools you'd otherwise buy separately. Have your IT provider model it out for you.
If You're on E5 Without Copilot
Don't let this announcement pressure you into adding AI you don't need. The E5 price increase to $60 is happening regardless. Focus on whether your business is actually ready for AI tools — not whether Microsoft wants you to buy them.
The Bigger Picture
Here's what I think is really going on. Microsoft is doing what they've always done: bundling more into higher tiers to increase average revenue per user. The AI arms race with Google and Amazon means they need to get Copilot adoption numbers up, and the fastest way to do that is to make it part of a package deal instead of a line item people can say no to.
That doesn't mean it's bad for you. Bundling often saves money. But it does mean you should make decisions based on what your business needs today — not based on Microsoft's product launch calendar.
The companies that win with technology are the ones that adopt tools when they're ready, not when vendors tell them to.
Quick summary: Microsoft 365 E7 launches May 1, 2026 at $99/user/month. It bundles E5 + Copilot + Agent 365 + Entra Suite. E5 price increases to ~$60 in July. Most small businesses don't need to act yet — but if you're already paying for E5 + Copilot, it's worth running the numbers.
